After Zcash’s Sharp Price Drop, Developers Take Action: Major Upgrade in the Works

Following the recent discovery of a security vulnerability, the Zcash ecosystem has announced a new modernisation plan aimed at strengthening the network’s privacy and security infrastructure.

The new network upgrade and privacy system, called Ironwood, developed in collaboration with Zcash Open Development Lab (ZODL), Tachyon, Valar Group, Zcash Foundation and Shielded Labs, is planned for implementation by the end of July 2026.

According to the announcement, Ironwood will be based on the existing Orchard protocol, but will also include formal verification processes and independent security reviews. The new system will also verify the amount of $ZEC transferred from the Orchard pool to Ironwood through a mechanism called Turnstile. This will allow everyone to verify the total amount of $ZEC circulating in the network, increasing the transparency and security of the protocol.

ZODL said that the recently discovered Orchard integrity vulnerability was identified during ongoing security investigations and resolved as part of a coordinated upgrade process. The organisation stated that there is no evidence that the vulnerability was exploited, user funds were not affected, and the total $ZEC issuance remained unchanged. The statement also clarified that the security issue did not affect the privacy features of the pools and that Orchard continues to function normally.

As part of the upgrade plan, the Orchard pool will no longer accept new deposits or intra-pool transfers. Users will be able to move their existing assets into Ironwood only through the Turnstile mechanism. Orchard-supported wallets will offer a one-click transfer feature to simplify this transition process. In addition, users will not need to create a new address to receive funds; the Ironwood pool will continue to use their existing Orchard addresses.

At the same time, ZODL is also working on broader changes to its network infrastructure. These include the phased decommissioning of the old zcashd client, the development of a new command-line wallet called Zallet, support for node operators migrating to the Zebrad client, and ensuring that wallets and software development kits (SDKs) are compatible with the Ironwood upgrade.
