Coinbase Rebrands Its Crypto Wallet
Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN) has launched the Base app, rebranding its Coinbase Wallet into a “super app” that combines social media, mini-apps, chat, payments, and trading. The company described this move as a new chapter in the development of the Base ecosystem.
“Coinbase Wallet is now called Base and has transformed from a wallet into a universal app that combines social networks, apps, chat, payments, and trading,” the crypto exchange said in a statement.
The new Base app was introduced at Coinbase’s “A New Day One” conference in Los Angeles.
According to John Granat, head of app development, the company created the app to “expand economic freedom, creativity, and innovation.” He added that Coinbase Wallet could become “a starting point for building a new type of social network.”
The super app is currently in beta testing and available only through pre-registration. After the official launch, Base app users will have access to a social network, a platform for discovering and using apps, encrypted chat, and a wallet for trading and payments.
Similar super apps have already been developed or are being developed by other tech giants such as Meta (NASDAQ:META), X, Grab, WeChat, and Alipay.
