Logins and Passwords of 420,000 Binance Customers Leaked Online
The leaked data includes usernames as well as passwords obtained from phones and computers. The compromised data includes 48 million Gmail accounts, 17 million Facebook users, 6.5 million Instagram accounts, 4 million Yahoo accounts, 3.4 million Netflix accounts, and 780,000 TikTok accounts. The total volume of compromised data reaches 94 gigabytes.
A security specialist clarified that the leak of Binance login credentials was not related to a breach of the exchange’s internal systems. The data was obtained via an information-stealing program known as Infostealer, malware that stealthily extracts stored credentials from compromised devices. Cyvers CEO Deddy Lavid confirmed that the incident points to a data leak from users’ devices rather than a hack of the exchange itself.
A significant portion of the exposed data is linked to accounts associated with government institutions and .gov domains. This creates a heightened risk of phishing attacks, as attackers may impersonate government agencies, Fowler noted. A limited sample of the records also contains accounts belonging to financial institutions, data related to crypto wallets and trading accounts, as well as banking and credit card information.
The Infostealer malware is disguised as cheats or modifications for video games such as Roblox, after which it compromises victims’ accounts to steal cryptocurrency or installs crypto miners on their devices, according to Kaspersky representatives. Built on Chromium and Gecko engines, the malicious code targets the most popular browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Yandex, Edge, and Brave.
In August last year, a database belonging to the Japanese division of the bankrupt crypto exchange FTX, containing sensitive information of more than 35,000 users, was discovered online. In the same year, rumors emerged about a security breach at the crypto exchange Bybit, which the exchange later denied.
