Japan’s Metaplanet acquires additional $15.2M in Bitcoin
According to Gerovich, the company’s total Bitcoin investments have exceeded $2 billion, with its holdings reaching 20,136 BTC. Metaplanet currently ranks sixth among all corporate Bitcoin holders worldwide.
The company’s unrealized profit is estimated at $2.25 billion, with Bitcoin trading at $111,591 at the time. Its investment returns were as follows:
-
from January 1 to March 31 — 95.6%;
-
from April 1 to June 30 — 129.4%;
-
from July 1 to September 8 — 30.8%.
Originally a hotel management business, Metaplanet shifted focus to cryptocurrency investments — primarily Bitcoin accumulation — after financial difficulties caused by last year’s downturn in Japan’s tourism industry.
In 2026, Metaplanet plans to open a Bitcoin Hotel in Tokyo and has already secured rights to distribute Bitcoin Magazine in Japan for educational purposes and crypto content promotion.
Earlier, at an extraordinary shareholders’ meeting on September 1, the company’s board announced plans to purchase an additional 190,000 BTC by 2027, which would bring its reserves to 210,000 coins.
