PayPal’s stablecoin will be available in 68 more countries
- PayPal plans to expand the availability of $PYUSD to 68 new countries already in March.
- Most of them are jurisdictions where the population lacks access to financial services and faces high inflation.
- Some of these clients will also have the opportunity to receive rewards for holding stablecoins.
PayPal intends to expand access to its stablecoin $PYUSD to 68 additional countries in South America, Africa, and Asia. This was reported by Fortune, citing May Zabaneh, head of the company’s cryptocurrency division.
Currently, $PYUSD is available in only two jurisdictions — the United States and the United Kingdom. However, starting in March 2026, its availability will expand to 68 new markets.
These include countries in South America (Colombia, Peru), Africa (Uganda), and Asia. Most of them are markets where people lack access to banking services or where such access is limited, while the purchasing power of national currencies is rapidly declining.
“Now you are opening not only access to these services in general — especially in places where they are most needed — but also access to cross-border transfers and increased transaction volumes in areas where the problem is particularly acute,” said Zabaneh.
PayPal customers in these jurisdictions will be able to send and receive $PYUSD, as well as earn rewards simply for holding the stablecoin. In the United States, for example, the rate is 4% annually.
Meanwhile, the full list of jurisdictions where the asset will be available has not been disclosed. At the same time, PayPal operates in 200 countries.
It is worth noting that the service has been available in Ukraine since March 2022, although with certain limitations. At the time of writing, it is unknown whether Ukraine will be included among the jurisdictions where $PYUSD will be available.
What is known about this asset?
PayPal launched its own stablecoin in August 2023. The company is actively integrating it into other products.
For example, content creators in the United States can receive payments in $PYUSD. The market capitalization of the asset is $4.09 billion, according to CoinMarketCap.
