Perhaps the Most Important Vote in Toncoin (TON) History Ended Today
The Toncoin ($TON) community has approved a Telegram-backed proposal to rename the network’s native token. As a result of the vote, the native token known as Toncoin will be renamed “Gram”, while its ticker will change from “$TON” to “GRAM”.
During the community vote, which began on June 1, 2026 and ended on June 8, 2026, today, 81.22% of participants supported the proposal. A total of 2.68 million TON voted in favour, while 604.88 thousand TON voted against. Another 0.45% abstained.
Telegram’s proposal clarifies that the change affects only the token name and transaction code. Accordingly, the blockchain name will remain unchanged, and the network will continue to be called “$TON” or “The Open Network”. In addition, there will be no token swaps, bridge transactions, migrations or conversion processes. User balances, addresses, smart contracts and current positions will remain unchanged. For example, a user with a balance of 10 $TON will see those assets displayed directly as 10 GRAM.

The proposal states that the renaming decision is part of the “Make $TON Great Again” (MTONGA) initiative. The key reasons for the change included Telegram’s growing role in the $TON ecosystem and its emergence as one of the network’s largest validators. It was also noted that recent network upgrades increased transaction speed by roughly ten times, allowing transactions to be completed in less than a second, while reducing fees by around six times, practically to zero.
The statement also noted that the name “Gram” is not new to the $TON ecosystem. It said that in the original $TON technical documentation, the native token was defined as Gram, and that this name continues to be used in the network’s core code.
