U.S. senators called for an investigation of the crypto exchange Binance
In the United States, lawmakers have increased scrutiny of the cryptocurrency exchange Binance amid reports of possible violations of the sanctions regime. A group of Democratic senators stated that they intend to monitor the actions of the Department of Justice if a relevant investigation is conducted.
The statement was made by senators Chris Van Hollen, Elizabeth Warren, and Ruben Gallego. In their view, Congress will closely follow the development of the situation and will ensure that any review conducted by federal authorities is carried out as thoroughly as possible. The lawmakers emphasized that if violations are identified, the company must be held accountable.
The comments appeared after a publication by The Wall Street Journal. The outlet, citing insiders, reported that the U.S. Department of Justice is examining Binance’s possible involvement in circumventing American sanctions. The issue concerns cryptocurrency transactions that may have allowed criminal organizations to carry out transfers bypassing existing restrictions.
The senators noted that such reports raise serious concerns, as cryptocurrency platforms may be used to move funds outside the traditional financial system. In their view, if the information is confirmed, it may involve the financing of criminal organizations.
Binance stated that it is not aware of any investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice. A representative of the exchange emphasized that the platform cooperates with regulatory and law-enforcement agencies and fully complies with sanctions legislation.
At the same time, the company filed a defamation lawsuit against The Wall Street Journal. The reason was a publication dated February 23, which claimed that Binance employees conducted transactions totaling $1 billion, and that these assets were linked to criminal activity.
