ChatGPT Gets Cryptocurrency Purchasing Function Through MoonPay

  • Buying cryptocurrencies through ChatGPT has become a reality.
  • MoonPay has integrated the purchase of Bitcoin, $XRP, Solana, $USDC and other digital assets directly into the chatbot.
  • Users must complete KYC verification and connect a crypto wallet before using the service.

The new MoonPay application appeared in the ChatGPT Apps catalog. It allows users to generate cryptocurrency purchase links directly inside the chatbot without needing to search for external exchanges or payment platforms.

MoonPay Calls AI Chatbots the New “Gateways to the Internet”

The company stated that ChatGPT and other AI assistants are becoming a new distribution channel for financial services and crypto products.

MoonPay product lead and blockchain engineer Kevin Arifin explained:

“We already saw this in commerce and AI, where many people get shopping recommendations from ChatGPT. Now people are beginning to conduct financial research inside ChatGPT, and it always surprised me that there wasn’t an easy way to buy crypto directly within ChatGPT.”

The service allows users to ask about a specific asset and then request the chatbot to purchase a chosen amount of cryptocurrency. ChatGPT then generates a payment link through MoonPay.

Despite the integration, users must still complete standard KYC verification and connect a wallet. If a MoonPay account has already been verified, users do not need to repeat the process.

“You simply log into your existing MoonPay account. The system recognizes your authorization, allows payment using your last-used method, and sends the assets to your selected address,” Arifin said.

Focus on AI and Crypto Payments

MoonPay believes the ChatGPT integration is not only a way to simplify crypto purchases, but also an opportunity to educate users through conversational interaction.

“It’s like having a broker next to you — not for financial advice, but for explaining the asset you’re buying. That’s why ChatGPT is the ideal place for this,” Arifin explained.

He also added that “the ability to simply converse within ChatGPT is a huge breakthrough,” noting that this kind of interaction had previously been missing.

According to MoonPay, large language models may eventually handle far more than generating payment links.

At the same time, Arifin acknowledged that users relying entirely on ChatGPT effectively remain inside the ecosystem of OpenAI. That is why he highlighted local AI clients such as OpenClaw and Hermes as promising alternatives, since these agents can directly interact with users’ devices.

“Applications like ChatGPT, Claude and others are becoming the new front doors to the internet. People come there not only for search, like they did with Google, but for full exploration of what they want to accomplish,” Arifin concluded.

Part of MoonPay’s Broader AI Strategy

The integration is part of MoonPay’s wider AI strategy. Earlier, the company:

  • acquired fintech company Meso to build a global payments network;
  • enabled AI agents to access crypto wallets through MoonPay Agents;
  • launched MoonAgents Card, a virtual Mastercard for spending stablecoins through AI agents;
  • acquired the Decent project for cross-chain transactions and automated swaps across more than 200 blockchains.
