Danske Bank has offered its clients the option to invest in bitcoin and ether.
Users of Danske eBanking and Danske Mobile Banking are promised access to two cryptocurrencies through ETPs, two of which track the performance of bitcoin and one tracks the performance of ether. The selected ETPs (ETFs) are funds managed by BlackRock and WisdomTree.
Danske Bank explained the introduction of the new option by the growing client demand for cryptocurrencies — the bank has been increasingly receiving requests from people who want to add crypto assets to their investment portfolios and are willing to take on high risks.
Kerstin Lysholm, Head of Investment Product Development at Danske Bank, acknowledged that in recent years the crypto industry has become much better regulated thanks to the EU Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), which has increased trust in the industry.
Previously, Danske Bank had taken a more categorical stance. In 2018, the bank announced that it would not offer or support any form of crypto trading through its platforms and advised clients not to invest in digital assets. In 2021, Danske again urged clients to exercise caution regarding digital assets but promised not to restrict users’ cryptocurrency transactions.
