Other Trump faces possible impeachment over cryptocurrency scandal

American President Donald Trump faces the threat of impeachment due to a cryptocurrency-related scandal.

In May 2025, one of the investment companies owned by Arab Sheikh Tahnun bin Zayed Al Nahyan invested $2 billion in World Liberty Financial, a firm founded by Trump’s sons — Eric and Donald — and the son of U.S. special envoy to the Middle East Steve Whitkoff, Zack. Two weeks later, the UAE sold valuable U.S.-made computer chips, which significantly benefited the Emirati economy and the Sheikh personally, as many of the devices were transferred to his company G42.

Journalists from The New York Times conducted an investigation and found no evidence that these transactions were linked. However, correspondents established that close business relationships had formed between the Trump family, Whitkoff, and Sheikh Tahnun, enriching them and raising questions about the ethical conduct of Donald Trump and his associates.

Three lawyers interviewed by The New York Times believe such operations violate ethical standards in the American political establishment. These could become grounds for the president’s impeachment. Nevertheless, users on the cryptocurrency prediction platform Polymarket currently do not expect Trump to be removed from office, estimating the probability at only 4%.

Change in Trump’s impeachment odds

If proven true, this would spark the largest corruption scandal in U.S. history, wrote Ryan Cummings of Stanford University.

It should be noted that World Liberty Financial recently unlocked its eponymous cryptocurrency, whose market capitalization will reach $22.36 billion after all coins are issued. Donald Trump personally owns about 15.75 billion WLFI tokens valued at $3.52 billion at the current price, while his sons hold an additional 9.25 billion WLFI worth $2 billion. Thus, World Liberty Financial has brought them a total of $5.52 billion.
