Bitwise CIO Explains Why He’s Betting on Solana

Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan has explained why he’s bullish on Solana over the long term. According to him, this Layer-1 blockchain gives investors “two ways to win” — and both look highly attractive.

A Bet on Stablecoin Growth and Tokenization

In a post on X, Hougan said Solana is positioned to benefit from two key trends:

  1. The growth of the stablecoin and tokenization infrastructure market, and

  2. Solana’s expanding share within that market.

“I like investments that offer two ways to win,” he wrote.
Hougan believes people severely underestimate how quickly technology will transform financial markets.
“I can easily imagine this market growing tenfold or more,” he added.

As for Solana’s advantages over Ethereum, Hougan highlighted its speed, user experience, and strong developer community with a “move fast” mentality.

Ethereum Still the Undisputed Leader

To be fair, Solana still has a long way to go to challenge Ethereum.
According to DefiLlama, Ethereum hosts over $163 billion in stablecoins and has a total value locked (TVL) of more than $85 billion.

By comparison, Solana’s stablecoin market cap stands at just over $14.9 billion, and its TVL exceeds $11.3 billion.
The gap is vast, but Hougan sees Solana as one of the top contenders alongside Tron and BNB Smart Chain.

Institutional Interest is Growing

Hougan also pointed to rising institutional interest in Solana.
He cited Western Union’s decision on October 28 to integrate Solana’s blockchain for its stablecoin settlement system.

“It’s a relatively new asset catching up to competitors in winning institutional mandates, but it’s gaining momentum,” Hougan said.

Bitwise itself offers Solana-related investment products, including a staking ETF launched on October 28.

If Hougan’s forecasts play out, the combination of a growing market and Solana’s increasing share could prove explosive for the network’s long-term growth — “just like Bitcoin,” he noted.

Bitcoin Also Has “Two Ways to Win”

Hougan applied the same reasoning to Bitcoin, which, in his view, is a bet both on the expansion of the global store-of-value market and on Bitcoin increasing its dominance within it.

“Many investors make the mistake of focusing too much on Bitcoin’s market share and too little on the growth of the overall market,” he explained.

Over the past 20 years, the global store-of-value market has grown tenfold, from less than $3 trillion in 2005 to $27.5 trillion today.

Hougan’s strategy rests on the belief that technological change in finance will unfold faster than most expect, and that Solana is well positioned to be one of the main beneficiaries thanks to its technical strengths and active developer ecosystem.

ChatGPT, Grok and Claude Predict Where Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP and Solana Could Be by December 31

2026 has been a difficult period for the cryptocurrency market: since the start of the year, each of the five largest crypto assets by market capitalisation has posted double-digit losses. Among this group, Solana ($SOL) has suffered the most, losing more than 47% of its value since January 1. To understand where the market may head next, we asked several leading modern artificial intelligence (AI) models to forecast the year-end prices of $BTC, $ETH, $BNB, $XRP and $SOL. Their answers were, to put it mildly, intriguing.
