Cryptocurrency Bitcoin Surpasses $76,000 Despite Geopolitical Turmoil
  • The breakdown of agreements between the U.S. and Iran triggered volatility in Bitcoin, but not a sustained decline.
  • On Monday, April 20, BTC rose above the $76,000 mark.
  • After dropping to an intraday low of $73,753, Bitcoin rebounded to around $76,500 later the same day.

This occurred despite clashes between the U.S. Navy and Iranian forces over the weekend, which dashed hopes for extending the ceasefire and stabilizing financial and commodity markets.

The daily chart shows that around 5 a.m., Bitcoin briefly fell below $74,700 before rebounding to $75,600. The same pattern repeated later: the leading cryptocurrency dipped below $75,000 for a third time before a sharp bounce pushed it back above $76,000.

The earlier peak was driven by Iran’s announcement of reopening commercial transit through the Strait of Hormuz, which pushed oil prices below $90 per barrel. The sudden drop in energy prices acted as a key catalyst for a broad rally, briefly supporting both equities and digital assets.

However, optimism proved short-lived. Just hours after reopening the strait, Tehran accused Washington of bad-faith negotiations, citing a statement by President Donald Trump about maintaining the blockade of Iranian ports. This diplomatic breakdown led to the strait being closed again.

Against this backdrop, Asian stock markets managed modest gains despite rising energy prices, while European markets turned negative. Major European indices, including the CAC 40 and DAX, fell more than 1%, while U.S. markets opened lower as investors braced for further volatility.

Crypto market fluctuations on Monday led to a wave of leveraged position liquidations. In Bitcoin alone, $126.31 million in leveraged positions were liquidated, with nearly $82 million coming from long positions. Total crypto market liquidations exceeded $390.5 million, with long positions accounting for $247 million.
