Tether to Issue USDT in the US Thanks to GENIUS Act

Tether will legally offer its USDT stablecoin in the United States under a program for foreign issuers in accordance with the GENIUS Act, signed by Donald Trump on Friday.

Right after the final approval of the law, Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino stated that the company will comply with the new regulations for stablecoin issuers operating outside of the US. This means that USDT, which is currently issued in El Salvador, will now be able to circulate legally within the United States.

“We will work very, very hard to comply with the foreign issuer requirements under the GENIUS Act. It’s just crazy that some people think Tether wouldn’t comply,” Ardoino said.

He added that the company has three years to fully meet all requirements, including anti-money laundering laws and reserve audit obligations.

Despite the plans to expand USDT within the US, Ardoino reiterated that Tether still intends to launch a separate stablecoin tailored to American legal standards.

The idea of a new cryptoasset first emerged in April, when Ardoino hinted that the company might need a dedicated coin for US users to avoid legal complications after new regulations were passed. Now, both products will be launched in parallel, with different structures and for different audiences. According to Ardoino, USDT will likely be used more frequently by immigrants working in the US, while the new stablecoin will be targeted at US companies and institutions.
